World major brand Hugo Boss, Burberry from Italy, United Kingdom, France, Hong Kong, and Canada, and Kering brand representatives contacted herders in Mongolia online to discuss sustainable cashmere on October 19-23.
The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Mongolia Sustainable Cashmere Platform has conducted a series of virtual meetings connecting herders in Shinejinst soum of Bayankhongor province and Ikh Tamir soum of Arkhangai province from their pastureland where the starting point of the global level cashmere supply chain.
During the meeting, herders discussed with representatives of brand companies the issues of “sustainable” cashmere production, animal welfare, pasture degradation, livestock quality, and breeding. Due to natural and climatic conditions, herders are organizing against pasture degradation and desertification, intensifying “sustainable cashmere” production, sorting cashmere during combing, and introducing animal welfare and proper pasture management to factories at marginal prices.
In the cashmere industry, which accounts for 30 percent of the country's population, this type of meeting was an unprecedented event.
The Mongolian Sustainable Cashmere Platform under the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) will hold its first joint meeting in Ulaanbaatar on November 20 to support the long-term sustainable development of the cashmere industry and strengthen stakeholder cooperation, trust and leadership are preparing to establish.
