LUNAR NEW YEAR AND TERELJ NATIONAL PARK

What is the most important day of a year for a Mongol? It is Tsagaan Sar. It means reconnecting with your family, sharing your joy and sorrow, make sure to let people know that you care.  We pay visit to each other despite the distance, taking your family with you, all dressed to your best. We share the traditional meals and prepare gifts for each visitor. Joining this trip, you can be part of this special day, important occasion, and intangible heritage of Mongolian culture. During your stay, you will go out of Ulaanbaatar city to Terelj National Park, the most beautiful area and enjoy the color of winter and snow.

LUNAR NEW YEAR EVE WRESTLING COMPETION

Depending on your arrival time in UB, optionally have a walking city tour. Visit the national history museum, which is a great introduction of the past. Walk across Sukhbaatar square located in the central of the capital, which many people will walk by in their traditional clothes. They are the most elegant ones for your camera to be captured. In the afternoon, about 1.00 P.M. go to wrestling palace to see Tsagaan Sar or lunar new year eve wrestling ceremony. Since it’s the “bituun” new year eve day, a big wrestling match broadcast nationwide as well. But we are the ones watching live. It is one of the most prestigious national wrestling tournaments in Mongolia next to the Naadam. About 250 wrestlers will be competing nationwide for 7 rounds.

THE FIRST DAY OF LUNAR NEW YEAR

On your first day of Lunar new year you will visit a Mongolian family in UB to learn the traditional greeting called “zolgoh” and custom of Tsagaan Sar in the city. During the new year days, the children honor their parents and elder relatives. Also, this is the only occasion that all the relatives meet.   Your guide will demonstrate you how to greet with people and tell you some do’s and don’ts before visiting the family. Foodwise, the main dish is steamed dumpling called “buuz” served along with variety of salads and among others prepared for the feast. Almost everyone will be dressed in traditional clothing DEEL. Although it is not mandatory, dressing in Mongolian traditional clothing may help you blend in better and makes the whole experience a lot more fun.

TERELJ NATIONAL PARK, ARAYAPALA TEMPLE, TURTLE ROCK, NOMAD FAMILY

Terelj National Park has magnificent scenery, interesting rock formation and covered by forests, wetlands and alpine tundra.  After breakfast, drive to Aryapala temple located on a spectacular rocky hillside. On a way up to hill you will see Buddhist proverbs en route to the temple.  Along the way several stupas and painted Buddha motifs on the rock. On the way back stop at Turtle rock for photography ops. At this time of a year most incredible winter landscape you will see. Visit nomad family to continue to celebrate new year and enjoy local culture on new year and get more presents.

TERELJ STATUE OF CHINGGIS KHAAN, NOMAD FAMILY

After having lunch at camp drive to Equestrian Statue of Chinggis Khaan statue which is 40 m tall (131ft), located on the bank of Tuul river, you can walk to the head of the horse through its chest where you will have a panoramic view of the surrounding area. You can learn more about the history of Mongolia. On a way back to Ulaanbaatar stop for small mining town to visit Kazakh family to have lunch and learn more different side of minorities. Even though, their new year celebration holiday of Nauryz celebration is in March, they are well-known by their   hospitability. So, when the guest is coming especially from a far, they accept very warmly.
